Overview

This Privacy Policy describes our policies and procedures on the collection, use and disclosure of your information when you use Bump and tells you about your privacy rights and how the law protects you.

We use your personal data to provide and improve Bump. By using Bump, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Our Privacy Promise

At Bump, we believe that your real-life connections are yours to control. We've built our app with privacy as a core value, giving you full control over what's shared and who can see your connections.

Privacy First

You control what's shared and who sees it. Your data stays yours.

Encryption

Your location data and personal information are encrypted for maximum security.

Collecting and Using Your Data
Types of Data Collected
Personal Data

While using Bump, we may ask you to provide us with certain personally identifiable information that can be used to contact or identify you. This may include:

  • Email address
  • First name and last name
  • Profile information
  • Phone number (for account verification)
  • Usage data
Mobile Device Data

When you access Bump via a mobile device, we may automatically collect:

  • Device type and mobile device unique ID
  • Mobile operating system version
  • Location data (with your permission)
  • App usage statistics and interaction patterns
  • Device diagnostic data

This information helps us optimize the app for your device and troubleshoot issues.

Information from Authentication Services

Bump allows you to create an account and log in through:

  • Email / Password
  • Google

If you choose to register through these services, we may collect data already associated with your account, such as your name and email address.

Social Connection Data

As Bump's primary function is to track your real-world social connections, we collect data about:

  • Who you meet with (other Bump users)
  • When and where these meetings occur
  • Frequency and duration of your interactions
  • Your social network and mutual connections

This data is central to creating your personal social journal and is stored securely. You control who can see this information through your privacy settings, and can also toggle features on and off.

Location Data
Important Location Privacy Notice

Bump's core functionality relies on location data to detect and record when you meet up with friends. This requires background location access that you must explicitly opt-in to. Without location permissions, key features of Bump will not function properly.

We collect and process location data in the following ways:

Background Location

Bump runs quietly in the background, using your location to detect when you're in proximity to other Bump users. This data is encrypted and used only to create your private interaction record. We collect this data even when the app is closed to ensure seamless tracking of your social interactions.

Location History

We create visualizations of where you've met friends over time. This data is stored securely and only shared with specific friends based on your privacy settings. Your location history provides valuable context for your social connections.

Nearby Friends

When enabled, we use your location to help you discover people with mutual friends or shared interests nearby. This feature compares your location with other users to facilitate real-world connections.

Opting Out

You can disable location tracking at any time through your device settings or within the app, though this will limit core app functionality. We respect your choice but want you to be aware that Bump's primary features depend on location data.

Location Privacy Controls

We provide several ways to control how your location data is used:

  • Privacy Mode: Pause location tracking while still using the app through System Settings
  • Location Sharing: Choose which friends can see your location history
  • Data Deletion: Permanently delete your location history at any time by contacting us directly

All location data is encrypted in transit and at rest. We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your location information from unauthorized access. You can delete your location history at any time through the app settings.

Device Permissions

As a mobile application, Bump requires certain device permissions to function properly. Here's why we need each permission:

Location Services (Required)

This is essential for Bump's core functionality. We need background location access to detect when you meet friends and create your social interaction record. Without this permission, Bump cannot function as intended.

iOS: "Allow Bump to access your location even when you are not using the app" must be enabled
Notifications

We send notifications about new connections, nearby friends, and app updates. While not required for core functionality, notifications enhance your experience by keeping you informed about your social activity.

Background App Refresh (Required)

Bump needs to run in the background to track your meetups even when the app isn't actively open. This is essential for accurately recording your interactions with friends throughout the day.

Note: Disabling background refresh will significantly reduce Bump's ability to track your social connections
Contacts (Optional)

With your permission, we can access your contacts to help you find friends who are already using Bump. We never upload your entire contact list to our servers — we only use this data to match existing users.

Photos (Optional)

We request access to your photos only when you choose to upload a profile picture or add photos to bumps in your Journal. We never access your photos without your explicit action.

Managing Permissions

You can manage Bump's permissions at any time through your device settings:

On iOS:

Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Bump

Settings → Bump → Permissions
